For most of my life I was happy to be the woman I was.
I had a loving family, a successful career, a healthy body and many wonderful experiences I continue to cherish to this day.
It was hard. But it was fulfilling. And I’m proud of the fact I managed to keep so many plates spinning for so many years.
Yet as I entered my early 50’s, I could barely admit to myself that things were really starting to change.
The all-day energy I used to take for granted was quietly disappearing an hour or two after lunchtime. Probably because a good night’s sleep was becoming a much rarer treat than it was before.
I then saw a few mystery pounds appear out of nowhere. I told myself it was the schedule, the stress and that I just needed a quiet month or two to get back on track but looking back now, I can see that my eating habits had changed. And maybe, these pounds weren’t such a mystery after all.
Sugars and carbs were never really on the menu but I still found myself eating them almost everyday. Far more than I ever did in my 30s and 40s.
It was tough.
I desperately wanted to be the healthy, fun woman that could be there for everything and everyone but I couldn’t locate that version of myself.
She had largely gone.
But I was a doctor after all.
And as convincing as the excuses I made to myself were, I knew something else was going on. So I started asking harder questions.
Eventually realizing that the symptoms I was experiencing weren’t random. And I certainly wasn’t alone because everything traced back to perimenopause and menopause.
Hormonal changes that were interfering with everything from my energy levels to my eating habits. From my sleep patterns to my weight.
So with my two plus decades experience in medicine to guide me, and the idea that there must be a better way than HRT to feel like myself again, I set off to find out how to live well while you’re in the midst of menopause.
